First Two Day

So I made it to Antarctica.  Yes it’s cold but Parkas are warm.  As a winter person I get my own room.    The meals are quite good and very filling.    I started work in the IT department today.  The two guys I work with are great.  It’s very dark and it messes with your head.  You have to remind yourself sometimes that you just ate lunch and it’s only 1 pm when it completely dark out.

Pictures are below.  I have more I’ll post later.   It just takes about 5 minutes to upload each picture.

This is the C-17 we flew down on.
Me on the flight deck of the C-17
This was after we had landed.  I took it from inside the bus.  It was a bit chaotic  and -40F so I didn’t want to get out to take it.  They land in total darkness.  Even the overhead lights in the trucks have to be taped over.
My room.  It’s a total mess after this picture but tonight’s project is to get it cleaned up and unpacked.

Lastly a rare treat.  We had Auroras my first and second night here.  They put out an alert over the radio to let people know.  Everyone grabbed their cameras and went outside,

Higher res version.  I didn’t realize that it was shrinking the images down.

Shuttle bound

I made it to the shuttle for the first time since we got here.  I’m headed to the CDC to get suited up and head to the plane.  Hopefully we don’t boomerang (turn around and come back).  If we do that we sit on a plane for 10 hours and go no where.  Hopefully my next post will be from Antarctica.

Flight update 7-14

So an update for everyone.  We have been delayed another 24 hours in New Zealand.  There was a large storm in Antarctica a few days ago and the runway and the road to the runway were damaged.  They are work to get it fixed now. We were hoping to fly out today because there is a storm incoming to NZ at the end of this week and then there are more storms on the way in Antarctica.  There will be some pictures going up soon from the Clothing Distribution Center.

Laser-Strike

Our group decided to do some team building exercises, by shooting each other with lasers.  It was a ton of fun.

New Zealand Day 2

So I made it to my hotel safely.  Finally got some sleep.  Today is Extreme Weather Clothing issue and training day.  But for now breakfast of champions.  I’ll post some more tonight after my visit to the CDC (Clothing Distribution Center).

Going away party, Mark 2

Waiting at the terminal at LAX and had to post some pix from my last going away party.  We had to do it the correct way.  Fogo De Chao.

I am en route

I am on my way to Antarctica.  It took a bit of work.   So I’m flying United DFW to Houston, Houston to Aukland, then Aukland to Christchurch.

So secondary update.  My flight from DFW to Houston got delayed and I would have missed my connecting flight.  New flight DFW to LAX.  Then LAX to Aukland. Next AUK to Christchurch.

Third update.  I have made it to LAX  hopefully I get through customs correctly in NZ.

Another update.  I have made it to New Zealand.  I cleared   One more flight to get to Christchurch and then I can get some sleep.  Cold weather gear is issued tomorrow.  Then on the 12th I fly to Antarctica.

Sub update.  Just found out there is fog in Christchurch.  Hopefully I’ll make it.

I made it to Christchurch.  I also met the USAP staff.  Headed to the hotel now.
